Missouri surety bonds

Missouri’s published statewide license bonds sit mainly with the Department of Revenue, the Division of Finance, county clerks, and the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Motor vehicle, powersport, wholesale, trailer, and boat dealers post a $50,000 surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit under § 301.560. Residential mortgage loan brokers follow a Division of Finance volume schedule under § 443.849. Money transmitters keep a bond under § 361.1002. Credit services organizations that take money before finishing services file a $10,000 bond or surety account. Notaries present a $10,000 four-year bond to the county clerk, and public adjusters file Department of Insurance Form MO 375-0033. Missouri does not run a statewide general-contractor license bond—contractor bonding is local or project-specific.

How it works in this state

How Missouri bonding is organized

How Missouri organizes these bonds

Dealer licensing is a Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Bureau program with a single $50,000 amount for the main dealer classes. Mortgage and money-transmission bonds run through the Division of Finance on NMLS, using volume or liability formulas rather than one fixed amount. Credit services organizations file with the director of finance when they take payment before completing services. Notary bonding is a county-clerk step after Secretary of State approval. Public adjusters file Form MO 375-0033 with the Department of Commerce and Insurance.

What this hub does not treat as statewide license bonds

There is no statewide general-contractor or trade-board license bond; cities and counties set their own contractor registration bonds. Collection agencies have no verified statewide license bond. Ordinary insurance producers and title producers are licensed without a statewide producer bond of the type published here. Public-works payment bonds under § 107.170 and other project contract bonds stay outside this Resource Center.

Before you apply

Confirm these details from the agency notice

Bring these five items when you request a bond. For the full checklist, see how to read a bond requirement.

  1. 1

    Match the licensed name

DOR dealer bonds and Division of Finance NMLS filings must use the same legal and DBA names that appear on the license application.

  2. 2

    Confirm activity-based amounts

Mortgage and money-transmitter amounts depend on Missouri volume or average daily liability—read the current Division of Finance schedule or § 361.1002 formula before ordering.

  3. 3

    Use the agency form

Dealer bonds must be on a DOR-approved form; public adjusters use Form MO 375-0033; notaries need a licensed Missouri surety for the four-year commission dates.

Frequently asked questions

Does Missouri require a statewide contractor license bond?

No. Missouri does not issue a statewide general-contractor license with a fixed board bond. Contractor registration bonds, when required, come from cities and counties. Public projects may still need separate payment or performance bonds.

Do collection agencies need a Missouri state surety bond?

No statewide collection-agency license bond was verified for this hub. Debt-collection conduct is still regulated, but there is no published statewide collection license bond of the type covered here.

Can a money transmitter post less than $100,000?

No. Section 361.1002 sets a $100,000 floor in both the liability formula path and the high tangible-net-worth alternative. The amount can rise to $500,000 under the average-daily-liability calculation.
