Minnesota electrical contractor licensing requires a $25,000 surety bond filed with the Department of Labor and Industry. Minn. Stat. § 326B.33, subdivision 15 establishes that amount; § 326B.0921 and the DLI electrical contractor bond form govern how the bond is written and kept in force.

Who requires it
Businesses and individuals that contract to perform electrical work in Minnesota need an electrical contractor license and the matching $25,000 bond. Employees of a licensed electrical contractor do not need their own contractor bond.
How much is required
Minn. Stat. § 326B.33, subdivision 15 establishes the $25,000 contractor bond to the state. There is no volume schedule on this instrument. Use the DLI Electrical Contractor Surety Bond form—not a plumbing or mechanical form.
How to get and file it
Buy the bond from a surety company licensed to do business in Minnesota. Complete the current DLI Electrical Contractor Surety Bond, attach the power of attorney, and match the name on the bond to your Secretary of State filing (or individual proprietor name). Upload the executed bond with your iMS electrical contractor application or renewal package. File with DLI Construction Codes and Licensing Division as part of licensure. § 326B.0921 treats the bond as continuous from the issue date; a surety may cancel future liability with 30 days’ certified-mail notice to the commissioner. Keep a valid bond on file whenever the license is active. Electrical contractor licenses expire on the last day of February in even-numbered years—coordinate bond status with that renewal cycle.
