Minnesota surety bonds

This Minnesota hub covers Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and residential-roofer bonds. Amounts are fixed by statute—$25,000 for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical filings, and $15,000 for residential roofers—on DLI-approved forms. Technology-system, pipe-laying, subsurface sewage treatment (SSTS), and water-well bonds are not in this set.

How it works in this state

How Minnesota bonding is organized

Minnesota does not use one statewide “contractor license bond.” The Department of Labor and Industry bonds here cover electrical contractors, plumbing contractors, mechanical (HVAC/R) filings, and residential roofers—each on its own statute or DLI form even when several amounts match. Technology-system, pipe-laying, subsurface sewage treatment, and water-well bonds are not in this set. Residential building contractors and remodelers generally use the Contractor Recovery Fund rather than a DLI license bond of the kind published here. MnDOT utility bonds secure trunk-highway right-of-way permits and stay outside this Resource Center. Bid, performance, and payment bonds for individual jobs also stay outside this set.

Who sets the requirement?

Minnesota licensing agencies

Each agency below sets its own bond requirement. Open the related guide for amounts and filing steps.

Before you apply

Confirm these details from the agency notice

Bring these five items when you request a bond. For the full checklist, see how to read a bond requirement.

  1. 1

    Who requires it

Match the notice to DLI CCLD and distinguish it from MnDOT utility permit security.

  2. 2

    Bond title or form

Use the current DLI bond form for your exact license or filing—electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and roofer forms are not interchangeable.

  3. 3

    Required amount

Confirm the statutory or rule amount for your instrument ($25,000 for most published guides; $15,000 for residential roofers).

  4. 4

    License / business identifiers

Exact legal name as filed with the Minnesota Secretary of State (or individual proprietor name) must match the name on the bond.

  5. 5

    Term / continuation

Chapter 326B bonds stay in force while licensed; a surety may cancel with 30 days’ notice under § 326B.0921. Keep coverage live while the license or mechanical filing stays active.

Frequently asked questions

Can one $25,000 DLI bond cover electrical and plumbing?

No. Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical filings are separate legal instruments with their own statutes or DLI forms. Order and file the bond that matches the license or filing you are seeking.

Are MnDOT utility contractor bonds the same as DLI license bonds?

No. MnDOT individual and continuing utility sureties secure trunk-highway right-of-way permits. They are not statewide DLI contractor license bonds and are not published as guides in this Resource Center.

Do residential building contractors post the same bond as roofers?

Not as a universal statewide surety of the kind covered here. Residential roofers post a $15,000 bond under § 326B.86. Broader residential building contractor and remodeler licensing generally uses the Contractor Recovery Fund framework—confirm your packet with current DLI residential-contractor materials.

Are technology, pipe-laying, SSTS, and water-well bonds included here?

No. Those specialty instruments are outside this commercial-core set. Confirm current Department of Labor and Industry or other agency packets if your work falls in those trades.
