Who requires it

Anyone who performs or offers to perform plumbing work that needs a plumbing contractor or restricted plumbing contractor license must maintain the statutory bond. Confirm any limited statutory exemption directly with DLI before relying on a different trade credential.

How much is required

Minn. Stat. § 326B.46, subdivision 2 establishes a bond of at least $25,000 for plumbing work (or for combined plumbing and subsurface sewage treatment work when the bond also meets § 115.56 requirements). The ordinary DLI plumbing contractor amount used for licensing is $25,000—confirm the form you are filing if your work also covers subsurface sewage treatment systems.

How to get and file it

Obtain a Minnesota-licensed surety bond on the current DLI plumbing contractor form, match the name on the bond to your business filing, attach the power of attorney, and upload it with the plumbing contractor application in iMS. Keep the bond continuous under § 326B.0921 while the plumbing contractor license stays active. Plumbing contractor licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years. If the surety cancels, expect at least 30 days’ certified-mail notice to DLI—replace coverage before the license is left without a bond.

Cost note

$25,000 is the usual required bond amount on the plumbing contractor path, not the premium you pay. See bond amount vs premium. Bond amount vs premium →
