Dealer bonds sit with the Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division under Title 61 chapter 4 and must be renewed every year with a December 31 expiration. Mortgage broker, lender, and servicer bonds run through the Division of Banking and Financial Institutions on NMLS under the Montana Mortgage Act—one bond for each license type, sized by production or unpaid loan balances. Credit-counseling and debt-management companies license with the Office of Consumer Protection and file that office’s bond form. Notary commissions attach a Secretary of State bond under MCA 1-5-619. Public adjusters bond with the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance as part of adjuster licensing. Construction contractor registration under the Department of Labor and Industry is a workers’-compensation compliance credential without a general statewide license bond, and Montana does not operate a state money-transmitter license program.

Montana surety bonds
Montana’s published statewide license bonds concentrate at the Motor Vehicle Division for dealers, the Division of Banking and Financial Institutions for mortgage brokers, lenders, and servicers, the Department of Justice Office of Consumer Protection for debt-management companies, the Secretary of State for notaries, and the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance for public adjusters. Dealer amounts under MCA 61-4-101 run $50,000, $15,000, or $5,000 by vehicle class and renew annually with a December 31 expiration. Mortgage entities keep a separate bond for each broker, lender, or servicer license under MCA 32-9-123, sized by production or unpaid loan balances. Debt-management licensees file the Office of Consumer Protection’s $50,000 bond form. Regular notaries post a $25,000 bond for the four-year commission. Public adjusters file a $5,000 bond with the insurance commissioner. Montana does not publish a general construction-contractor license bond, does not license money transmitters at the state level, and does not require a statewide collection-agency or consumer-loan surety.

How it works in this state
How Montana bonding is organized
What this hub does not treat as statewide license bonds
No general construction-contractor registration bond remains in current state law. Money transmission has no Montana state license or surety schedule. Third-party collection agencies and consumer-loan licensees are not required to post a statewide collection or consumer-loan surety. Debt-settlement companies register with the Office of Consumer Protection but are not under the debt-management licensing bond. Escrow-business bonding under MCA 32-7-109 is amount-by-rule; the operative administrative figure was not verified from a primary rule text for a dedicated guide here. Municipal contractor or right-of-way bonds, public-works performance and payment bonds, and court bonds stay outside this commercial-core set.

Confirm these details from the agency notice
Bring these five items when you request a bond. For the full checklist, see how to read a bond requirement.
- 1
Agency and credential
Confirm whether you need a Motor Vehicle Division dealer bond, a Banking mortgage bond, a Department of Justice debt-management bond, a Secretary of State notary bond, or an insurance commissioner public-adjuster bond.
- 2
Tier or restricted class
Dealer amounts follow restricted vehicle class. Mortgage broker and lender amounts follow production; servicer amounts follow unpaid loan balances. Keep each mortgage license type on its own bond.
- 3
Filing channel
Mortgage sureties file electronically through NMLS. Dealer and debt-management bonds generally file as paper originals with the licensing packet. Notary bonds use the Secretary of State’s standardized form.
- 4
Exact legal name
Match the name on the bond—and any DBA the agency requires—to the license application. Motor Vehicle Division dealer instructions require full business and DBA names plus the physical address on the bond.

Frequently asked questions
Does Montana still require a construction contractor registration bond?
No general statewide construction-contractor license bond remains in current law. Earlier registration bonding was removed; today’s contractor registration/licensing focus is workers’-compensation compliance rather than a surety bond amount.
Do Montana money transmitters need a state surety bond?
Montana does not issue a state money-transmitter license, so there is no statewide MTL surety schedule. Federal FinCEN MSB registration and other states’ licenses are separate questions.
Is the motorcycle dealer bond the same as a car dealer bond?
No. Under MCA 61-4-101, dealers generally post $50,000, while businesses restricted to motorcycles or quadricycles post $15,000, and businesses restricted to motorboats, personal watercraft, snowmobiles, or off-highway vehicles post $5,000.
