Louisiana surety bonds

Louisiana’s published statewide license bonds in this hub sit with two motor vehicle commissions, the Office of Financial Institutions, the Attorney General for credit repair, the Secretary of State for notaries, and the Department of Insurance for public adjusters. New and recreational products dealers licensed by the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission post a $20,000 surety under R.S. 32:1254; used motor vehicle dealers licensed by the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission post a continuing $50,000 bond under R.S. 32:791. Residential mortgage lenders, brokers, and originators file an OFI NMLS surety of $25,000 or $50,000 based on prior-year Louisiana residential loan volume under R.S. 6:1088. Money transmitters and sellers of checks size under R.S. 6:1037—at least $25,000 in the first year, then a renewal formula floored at $25,000 and ordinarily capped at $500,000. Credit repair services organizations keep a $100,000 surety filed with the Attorney General under R.S. 9:3573.4 even though OFI no longer licenses that activity. Non-attorney notaries must maintain a $50,000 surety or personal surety under the February 1, 2026 bond law change. Public adjusters post a $50,000 surety or letter of credit under R.S. 22:1701. Collection agencies register with the Secretary of State without a statewide surety. Title insurance producer licensing does not appear on LDI’s surety-bond requirements list. The State Licensing Board for Contractors emphasizes a $10,000 net-worth showing, with a bond or letter of credit only as a substitute when that net worth is missing—not a universal fixed contractor license bond.

How it works in this state

How Louisiana bonding is organized

How Louisiana organizes these bonds

Louisiana splits new-vehicle and used-vehicle dealer bonding across two commissions: the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission for franchise and recreational products dealers on the $20,000 R.S. 32:1254 track, and the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission for used dealers on the $50,000 R.S. 32:791 track. Residential mortgage and money-transmission licensing run through the Office of Financial Institutions on NMLS, with volume and outstanding-obligation formulas setting amounts. Credit repair is an Attorney General bond obligation without a current OFI license. Notary commissions are lifelong, but the Secretary of State now requires a $50,000 surety or personal surety for non-attorney notaries, renewed on the bond’s own cycle. Public adjusters answer to the Louisiana Department of Insurance with a $50,000 surety or letter of credit before the license issues.

What this hub does not treat as statewide license bonds

Collection agencies and debt collectors register with the Secretary of State under R.S. 9:3534.1; that registration form does not require a surety bond. Title insurance producers meet LDI qualification and affidavit rules; LDI’s surety-bond requirements page does not list title producers among bond-required license types. The State Licensing Board for Contractors generally expects a $10,000 net-worth financial statement, allowing a bond or letter of credit only when that net worth is not shown—so there is no single fixed statewide contractor license amount published here. Parish and municipal contractor permits, project bid/performance/payment bonds, and court bonds remain outside this commercial-core set.

Before you apply

Confirm these details from the agency notice

Bring these five items when you request a bond. For the full checklist, see how to read a bond requirement.

  1. 1

    Match the correct dealer commission

New and recreational products dealers file with LMVC on the $20,000 track. Independent used dealers file with LUMVC on the $50,000 track. Using the wrong commission’s form will not satisfy licensing.

  2. 2

    Confirm volume-based OFI amounts

Mortgage sureties flip from $25,000 to $50,000 at $100,000,000 of prior-year Louisiana residential volume. Money-transmitter renewals recompute from outstanding checks or annual transmission volume under R.S. 6:1037.

  3. 3

Use current notary amount and filing path

Non-attorney notaries must carry $50,000 coverage. Errors and omissions policies no longer substitute. Company sureties file with the Secretary of State; personal sureties still involve parish recording rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do Louisiana collection agencies need a surety bond?

No statewide collection-agency surety is required under current registration law. Agencies and debt collectors file a Secretary of State registration under R.S. 9:3534.1 with a filing fee; that form does not call for a bond. Older repealed OFI collection-agency bond figures are not current law.

Is there a fixed statewide contractor license bond in Louisiana?

Not as a universal amount for every State Licensing Board for Contractors licensee. Board rules center on showing at least $10,000 net worth; a bond, letter of credit, or other acceptable security is an alternative when that net worth is not demonstrated, and the amount then relates to the shortfall. Parish or city permits can still impose separate local bonds.

Do Louisiana title insurance producers need a surety bond?

LDI’s published surety-bond requirements list does not include title insurance producers. Title producer licensing instead follows examination, residency or employment, and affidavit rules on LDI’s title qualifications pages. This hub does not publish a title-producer surety guide on that basis.

Do Louisiana attorney-notaries need the $50,000 bond?

No. Secretary of State notary filing guidance states that attorneys do not file a notary bond. The $50,000 surety or personal surety requirement applies to non-attorney notaries (including ex-officio notaries subject to the bond law).
