Vehicle dealer and Wyoming-based manufacturer sureties file with the Wyoming Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Services on Form MV-424. Residential mortgage lender and broker bonds, money-transmitter security, and collection-agency bonds run through the Division of Banking (Department of Audit), often via NMLS for mortgage and money-transmission credentials. Mortgage amounts follow volume schedules the commissioner sets by rule. Money-transmitter security can be a surety, an irrevocable letter of credit, or another form the commissioner accepts, and the statute also allows depositing cash or securities. Collection agencies may substitute a ten-thousand-dollar cash deposit with the state treasurer for the surety. General construction contractor licensing remains local; there is no statewide contractor registration bond in this hub.

Wyoming surety bonds
Wyoming’s published statewide license bonds concentrate at the Department of Transportation for vehicle dealers and Wyoming-based manufacturers, and at the Division of Banking for residential mortgage companies, money transmitters, and collection agencies. Dealers post a fixed twenty-five-thousand-dollar surety on Form MV-424 under W.S. 31-16-103(h) and must keep that coverage active with no gap. Mortgage lenders and brokers size under commissioner rules at twenty-five, fifty, or one hundred thousand dollars by prior-year Wyoming loan volume, and keep the bond until the commissioner releases it in writing. Money transmitters furnish security of at least ten thousand dollars under W.S. 40-22-106, scaling with outstanding payment instruments up to five hundred thousand dollars, and may use a letter of credit or approved deposit instead of a surety. Collection agencies post ten thousand dollars—or deposit that amount in cash—under W.S. 33-11-108, with each Wyoming office licensed separately. Wyoming does not require a statewide general-contractor license bond, repealed the notary surety requirement in 2021, and does not list a public-adjuster bond among Department of Insurance licensing steps.

How Wyoming bonding is organized
What this hub does not treat as statewide license bonds
Wyoming does not maintain a statewide general-contractor license bond—cities and counties set any local contractor bonding. The 2021 Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts removed the mandatory notary surety; bonds or E&O may be purchased voluntarily but are not filed as a commission condition. The Department of Insurance public-adjuster licensing page does not list a surety among required steps. Municipal right-of-way bonds, public-works performance and payment bonds, and court bonds remain outside this commercial-core set.

Confirm whether you need a WYDOT dealer bond, a Banking mortgage bond, money-transmitter security, or a collection-agency bond.

Mortgage amounts follow prior-year Wyoming loan volume. Money-transmitter security scales with outstanding payment instruments. Dealer and collection amounts are fixed.

Surety vs alternatives
Money transmitters may use a letter of credit or approved deposit. Collection agencies may deposit $10,000 cash with the state treasurer. Dealer and mortgage credentials use corporate sureties.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wyoming require a statewide contractor license bond?
No. Wyoming does not issue a statewide general-contractor license with a surety. Any contractor bonding is set by cities or counties where you work.
Do Wyoming notaries still need a surety bond?
No. The 2021 notary law removed the mandatory bond. Notaries may still buy a bond or errors-and-omissions insurance voluntarily, but it is not filed as a commission requirement.
Do Wyoming dealers need a brand-new bond every year?
You need to keep the required coverage active with no gap. A brand-new bond is not always required just because the license renews. If the surety cancels, have a replacement covering the same period in place first.
