New York Public Adjuster Bond

New York public adjusters must have a one-thousand-dollar surety bond on file with the superintendent before DFS will issue or renew the public-adjuster license. Insurance Law § 2108 conditions the bond on faithful performance by the licensee and named sub-licensees and makes the instrument payable to the State of New York.

Who requires it

New York State Department of Financial Services — Public adjusters

Common bond amount

$1,000

Fixed statutory amount for the public-adjuster licensing period.

How you file

File with DFS; payable to the State of New York

Renewal

File for each license/renewal term covering issuance through expiration

Who requires it

Applicants for public-adjuster licenses under Insurance Law § 2108. Independent adjusters acting for insurers are licensed separately and, under current DFS guidance, no longer file this bond. Entity licenses can cover named sub-licensees on one bond; individuals who hold their own public-adjuster licenses still need their own sureties.

How much is required

Section 2108 fixes the amount at one thousand dollars for the public-adjuster license period. There is no volume schedule for this instrument.

How to get and file it

Have an authorized surety execute the $1,000 public-adjuster bond with Acknowledgements and power of attorney, then upload the complete PDF with the DFS online (or paper) public-adjuster application. Size the bond to cover the licensing period from issuance through expiration. Renewals need a bond that remains in force for the new term. Keep the licensed name on the bond identical to the DFS license record.

Cost note

One thousand dollars is the required bond amount, not the premium you pay. See bond amount vs premium. Bond amount vs premium →

Frequently asked questions

Do independent adjusters still need a New York surety bond?

DFS states that a bond is no longer required for independent adjuster applicants. The $1,000 surety remains a public-adjuster license condition under § 2108.

Does one entity bond cover every employee adjuster?

A firm’s public-adjuster bond can cover sub-licensees named on that license. Employees who hold their own individual public-adjuster licenses still need separate bonds.
