Dealer bonds file with the Secretary of State through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles on Form MVD-390 and track prior-year or projected sales under Title 29-A. Most other commercial license bonds in this hub run through the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection inside the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Loan brokers, supervised lenders, money transmitters, debt collectors, and debt-management registrants generally apply and bond through NMLS, and the Bureau’s electronic surety-bond program now expects those instruments as NMLS electronic surety bonds. When a company has multiple branches that each need coverage, NMLS company electronic bonds are sized in the aggregate because the system does not issue separate branch bonds.

Maine surety bonds
Maine’s published statewide license bonds sit mainly with the Secretary of State’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection. Motor vehicle dealers—other than equipment and light trailer dealers—file a sales-tiered surety under 29-A M.R.S. §901 ranging from twenty-five thousand to one hundred thousand dollars on Form MVD-390. Loan brokers post twenty-five thousand dollars per licensed location under 9-A M.R.S. §10-202 (ten thousand dollars for refund-anticipation facilitators only), while supervised lender branch applications carry a fifty-thousand-dollar surety under §2-302. Money transmitters maintain one hundred thousand dollars of security under 32 M.R.S. §6100-S. Debt collectors size under administrator schedules that start at five thousand to twenty thousand dollars for new applicants and rise with Maine collection volume at renewal. Debt-management service providers file a fifty-thousand-dollar surety under 32 M.R.S. §6174. Maine does not impose a statewide general-contractor license bond, a notary commission surety, or a current public-adjuster bond after repeal of 24-A M.R.S. §1854.

How it works in this state
How Maine bonding is organized
What this hub does not treat as statewide license bonds
Maine has no statewide general-contractor or home-improvement license bond; electricians and plumbers license through professional boards without a universal contractor bond amount published here. Credit-services-style credit-repair activity is licensed as a loan broker under Article 10 of Title 9-A rather than as a separate credit-services organization bond track. Notary commissions do not require a surety. The former adjuster’s bond statute, 24-A M.R.S. §1854, has been repealed. Title-insurance producer licensing was not verified to a marketed statewide title-agent bond schedule for this hub. Municipal street-opening bonds, payroll-processor recovery-fund alternatives, and project bid, performance, payment, and court bonds stay outside the commercial-core set.

Confirm these details from the agency notice
Bring these five items when you request a bond. For the full checklist, see how to read a bond requirement.
- 1
Agency and license type
Confirm whether you need a BMV dealer bond on Form MVD-390 or a Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection instrument for loan brokerage, supervised lending, money transmission, debt collection, or debt management.
- 2
Amount logic
Dealers size from sales tiers; loan brokers and supervised lenders size per location (or one combined company bond); money transmitters use the $100,000 floor; debt collectors use initial activity amounts then renewal collection brackets; debt-management providers use $50,000.
- 3
NMLS electronic surety bonds
For Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection licenses on the electronic surety-bond list, arrange an electronic surety bond through NMLS. Use one company electronic bond in the combined amount when multiple branches need coverage.
- 4
Exact legal name and addresses
Match the name on the bond to the license. Multi-location loan-broker or lender bonds must list each covered physical address.

Frequently asked questions
Does Maine require a statewide contractor license bond?
No. Maine does not operate a statewide general-contractor license bond of the type published here. Local permit bonds and public-works performance or payment bonds are separate project instruments.
Is credit repair bonded separately from loan brokerage in Maine?
Credit-record improvement and related credit-services work for a fee fall within Maine’s loan broker definition under Title 9-A Article 10. The published surety path is the loan broker bond—not a separate credit-services organization amount.
Do Maine notaries need a surety bond?
No statewide notary commission bond is required. Optional errors-and-omissions insurance is a personal choice, not a Secretary of State commission bond.
Do Maine public adjusters still post an adjuster’s bond?
The former adjuster’s bond statute, 24-A M.R.S. §1854, has been repealed. This hub does not publish a current statewide public-adjuster bond.
