Georgia Used Motor Vehicle Dealer Bond

Used motor vehicle dealers licensed under chapter 43-47 must keep a surety bond on file with the State Board for Registration of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers and Used Motor Vehicle Parts Dealers. SB 293 amended O.C.G.A. § 43-47-8 so the used motor vehicle dealer amount is $50,000 effective July 1, 2026; used parts dealers remain at $10,000.

How much is required

O.C.G.A. § 43-47-8, as amended by SB 293 (effective July 1, 2026), establishes fixed amounts: $50,000 for used motor vehicle dealers and $10,000 for used parts dealers. The bond is payable to the Governor for purchasers harmed by misrepresentation, deceptive or unfair practices, or warranty breaches on used vehicles.

How to get and file it

Have a surety authorized in Georgia execute the dealer bond for the correct classification and amount. File it with the division director before or immediately upon license grant. Keep the public liability and property damage insurance the statute requires in addition to the bond. Licenses renew biennially. Do not cancel a posted bond without giving the division certified written notice at least 30 days beforehand. If the bond is canceled and no replacement is filed within ten days of the effective cancellation date, the division may revoke the license. Align renewals with the board’s even-year dealer cycle and current SOS instructions.

Cost note

$50,000 or $10,000 is the required bond amount, not the premium you pay. See bond amount vs premium. Bond amount vs premium →
