Colorado Public Adjuster Bond

Colorado public insurance adjusters must keep a bond of at least $20,000 for the life of the license. The Division of Insurance requires a signed bond and power of attorney in the commissioner-prescribed format under § 10-2-417 and Insurance Regulation 1-2-19, uploaded electronically through Sircon.

Who requires it

Anyone acting or holding out as a public adjuster in Colorado under C.R.S. § 10-2-417. Company or independent adjuster credentials are different producer categories and are not this public-adjuster instrument.

How much is required

Section 10-2-417(2) requires evidence of financial responsibility through a surety bond of at least $20,000, issued by an insurer authorized to write surety in Colorado, in favor of the state, authorizing recovery by the commissioner for persons damaged by the adjuster’s erroneous acts, failure to act, fraud conviction, or unfair-practices conviction. The Division’s producer page restates the $20,000 amount and points applicants to Regulation 1-2-19 for the required format.

How to get and file it

Have an authorized surety execute the $20,000 bond and power of attorney in the Regulation 1-2-19 format. Apply through Sircon or NIPR, then attach the signed bond and power of attorney electronically in Sircon after submitting the application. The Division warns that mailing the bond or failing to attach it can delay processing. Keep the bond in force for the duration of the license. The bond may not terminate unless at least thirty days’ prior written notice is filed with the commissioner and given to the licensee; the issuer must notify the commissioner upon termination. If coverage terminates or becomes impaired, the commissioner may summarily suspend authority to act as a public adjuster.
